Vera Franz heads the Intellectual Property Reform and Open Information Policy initiatives at the Information Program of the Open Society Institute. She has been deeply involved in the launch and development of the access to knowledge (A2K) movement. She has written two chapters for the forthcoming volume Access to Knowledge in the Age of Intellectual Property edited by Gaelle Krikorian and Amy Kapczynski, to be published by Zone Books/MIT Press in fall 2010. During her earlier years at OSI, she has taught a course on media, technology, and globalization at the department of communications at Salzburg University, Austria. Currently, she is developing a new initiative for the OSI Information Program on Genetic Information & Open Society.

Before joining the Open Society Institute, Franz was affiliated with the Austrian Techno-Z Research and Development Institute, researching information market developments for the European Commission. She has lived in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, running internet projects for local nongovernmental organizations.

Franz has studied in Canada, Italy, Austria, and the UK and holds a master's in media and communications from the London School of Economics and a mag. phil. in political science from Salzburg University, Austria.
