Christoph Rehmann-Sutter is a philosopher and bioethicist, Professor of Theory and Ethics in the Biosciences at the University of Lübeck in Germany. Born in 1959 he obtained a first training in molecular biology with a Diploma from the Biocenter at University of Basel, then a second full training in philosophy and sociology at the Universities of Basel, Freiburg in Breisgau and the Technical University of Darmstadt. 1997-1998 he joined the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management ESPM of the University of California at Berkeley as a Research Fellow. Since 1996 he was Head of the Unit for Ethics in the Biosciences at the University of Basel in Switzerland. He was board member then president of the Swiss Society for Biomedical Ethics (1999-2002), 2000-2009 he was member of the Research Ethics Commission Basel (EKBB), 2001-2009 he was Chair of the Swiss National Advisory Commission on Biomedical Ethics, elected by the Swiss Government, advising parliament and government in matters of bioethics. Rehmann-Sutter is widely recognised as a commentator on bioethics and biotech policy issues with regular appearances on radio and TV. He has published and taught on biomedical ethics, research ethics, environmental ethics and philosophy of biology, especially genetics, nationally and internationally and participated in numerous working groups and commissions at the Council of Europe (CDBI), UNO, WHO, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, SAMW, ScNAT and others. Since 2007 he is chairing an European-Chinese Expert Group on the Ethical Governance of Research in the Life Sciences and Biomedicine within EU-FP6. Since 2008 he is also a Visiting Professor at London School of Economics (LSE).
